Welcome to Real Health Uganda! We are thrilled to have you join our community of dedicated volunteers. This handbook will provide you with essential information to ensure a successful and rewarding volunteer experience.
2. Roles and Responsibilities
Healthcare Practitioners:
- Doctors and Nurses: Provide medical care, diagnosis, and treatment according to Ugandan medical standards. Must be licensed by the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council (UMDPC) or Nursing Council.
- Pharmacists: Responsible for dispensing medication and offering advice on drug interactions. Must hold a valid license from the Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda.
- Allied Health Professionals: Including lab technicians, radiographers, and physiotherapists, who must be registered with the Allied Health Professionals Council.
Support Roles (Non-Licensed):
- Community Health Workers: Assist in health education, outreach programs, and patient follow-ups. Training is provided by Real Health Uganda.
- Administrative Volunteers: Handle clerical duties, data entry, and support event planning.
- Fundraising and Event Planning: Organize and support fundraising events to benefit Real Health Uganda’s programs.
3. Code of Conduct
- Respect and Dignity: Treat all patients, staff, and fellow volunteers with respect and dignity, irrespective of their background.
- Confidentiality: Maintain the privacy of all patients and adhere to the confidentiality agreement (detailed below).
- Professionalism: Be punctual, dress appropriately, and carry out your duties with integrity.
- Teamwork: Collaborate effectively with the team and support a positive working environment.
4. Health and Safety Guidelines
- Infection Control: Follow all hygiene protocols, including handwashing, wearing protective gear, and proper disposal of medical waste.
- Emergency Procedures: Familiarize yourself with emergency exits, first aid stations, and the location of fire extinguishers. Report any incidents immediately.
- Vaccinations: Ensure you are up-to-date with all necessary vaccinations before engaging in healthcare activities.
5. Confidentiality Agreement
As a volunteer with Real Health Uganda, you will have access to sensitive patient information. You are required to:
- Sign a confidentiality agreement before starting your duties.
- Never disclose patient information outside of professional discussions within the healthcare team.
- Adhere to Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy Act, 2019.
6. Volunteer Rights
- Training: Receive appropriate training for your role, including orientation and ongoing support.
- Recognition: Be recognized for your contributions through certificates, awards, and public acknowledgment.
- Support: Access to a Volunteer Coordinator for guidance, feedback, and resolving any issues.
- Safety: Work in a safe environment with all necessary protective equipment provided.
7. Healthcare Practitioners Requirements
For Ugandan Nationals:
- Doctors, Nurses, and Pharmacists: Must possess valid licenses issued by respective regulatory bodies.
- Continuing Education: Proof of ongoing professional development is required for re-licensure.
For Foreign Practitioners:
- Recognition of Qualifications: Foreign practitioners must have their qualifications recognized by the Ministry of Health and relevant professional councils in Uganda.
- Temporary Registration: Obtain temporary registration with the relevant Ugandan regulatory body before practicing.
8. Prescription Manual for Uganda
- Legal Requirements: Only licensed practitioners can prescribe medications. Ensure prescriptions include the patient’s name, date, and proper dosage instructions.
- Controlled Substances: Follow strict guidelines for prescribing controlled substances, including proper documentation and reporting.
- Pharmacy Coordination: Work closely with pharmacists to ensure the correct dispensing of medications.
9. Other Volunteer Roles (Non-Licensed) and Application Process
Non-Licensed Roles:
- Community Health Educators: Engage in public health education and awareness campaigns. No prior medical experience required; training provided.
- Outreach Support: Assist in organizing community health events, distributing educational materials, and providing logistical support.
