Campaign Overview

Duration: May 2023 – December 2023
Objective: To improve hygiene and sanitation practices in rural communities across Uganda, aiming to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

This report details the activities conducted during the Hygiene and Sanitation Improvement Campaign, the outcomes achieved, and the lessons learned. It serves as a record of Real Health Uganda’s (RHU) commitment to enhancing public health through sustainable hygiene and sanitation practices.

1. Introduction

In many rural communities in Uganda, poor hygiene and sanitation practices have been a major contributor to the spread of infectious diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid. Recognizing the critical need to address these challenges, RHU launched the Hygiene and Sanitation Improvement Campaign in May 2023. This campaign focused on educating communities about proper hygiene practices, distributing essential hygiene supplies, and improving infrastructure to support better sanitation.

2. Campaign Activities

2.1 Community Workshops
A series of community workshops were conducted in 10 targeted rural communities. These workshops were designed to educate residents on the importance of personal and community hygiene. Key topics covered included:

  • Proper handwashing techniques
  • Safe water storage and treatment
  • Waste management practices
  • The importance of latrine use and maintenance

Each workshop was interactive, encouraging participants to share their experiences and challenges. RHU health educators utilized visual aids, demonstrations, and participatory activities to ensure the information was easily understood and retained.

2.2 Distribution of Hygiene Kits
To support the adoption of improved hygiene practices, RHU distributed over 5,000 hygiene kits to households in the targeted communities. Each kit included:

  • Soap
  • Water purification tablets
  • Handwashing stations (simple tippy-tap kits)
  • Educational materials on hygiene practices

The distribution process was accompanied by demonstrations on how to effectively use each item in the kit.

2.3 Installation of Handwashing Stations
In collaboration with local leaders and community members, RHU installed handwashing stations in strategic locations within each community. These stations were placed near markets, schools, health centers, and communal water sources to encourage regular handwashing. The installation process included training on how to maintain these stations to ensure their long-term use.

3. Outcomes

3.1 Improved Hygiene Practices
By the end of the campaign in December 2023, there was a noticeable improvement in hygiene practices across the 10 targeted communities. Key outcomes include:

  • Handwashing: A significant increase in regular handwashing, especially before meals and after using the toilet.
  • Safe Water Use: More households reported treating their water before drinking, either through boiling or using the water purification tablets provided.
  • Latrine Use: An increase in the consistent use of latrines, with fewer reports of open defecation.

3.2 Decrease in Waterborne Diseases
Health data collected from local clinics and health centers indicated a decrease in cases of waterborne diseases, such as cholera and dysentery, in the targeted communities. Specifically:

  • Dysentery: A 35% reduction in reported cases.

These reductions can be directly linked to the improved hygiene practices promoted during the campaign.

4. Community Engagement

Community engagement was a critical component of the campaign’s success. RHU worked closely with local leaders, health workers, and community-based organizations to ensure the campaign’s activities were well-received and sustainable. Highlights include:

  • Local Leadership: Local leaders played a pivotal role in mobilizing community members to attend workshops and adopt new practices.
  • Health Workers: Community health workers were trained to continue promoting hygiene and sanitation practices beyond the campaign’s duration.
  • Community Feedback: Regular feedback sessions were held to address any challenges faced by community members and to make necessary adjustments to the campaign.

5. Challenges and Lessons Learned

5.1 Challenges

  • Cultural Barriers: In some communities, traditional beliefs and practices posed challenges to the adoption of new hygiene practices. Overcoming these barriers required culturally sensitive approaches and the involvement of respected local figures.
  • Resource Limitations: While the distribution of hygiene kits was effective, limited resources meant that not every household received one. Future campaigns should seek additional funding or partnerships to increase coverage.

5.2 Lessons Learned

  • Sustainability is Key: Ensuring that communities have the resources and knowledge to maintain improved hygiene practices is essential for long-term impact. Training local health workers and engaging community leaders were critical to this campaign’s sustainability.
  • Community Involvement: Direct involvement of community members in the planning and implementation of activities increased ownership and the likelihood of continued practice after the campaign ended.

6. Conclusion

The Hygiene and Sanitation Improvement Campaign achieved significant success in improving hygiene practices and reducing the incidence of waterborne diseases in the targeted communities. Through education, resource distribution, and infrastructure improvement, RHU was able to make a tangible difference in public health outcomes. The lessons learned from this campaign will inform future efforts to address hygiene and sanitation challenges in other communities across Uganda.

7. Recommendations

7.1 Continued Support and Monitoring
It is recommended that RHU continue to monitor the targeted communities to ensure sustained adoption of the improved practices. Periodic follow-up visits and refresher workshops could reinforce the messages delivered during the campaign.

7.2 Expansion to Additional Communities
Given the success of this campaign, RHU should consider expanding similar initiatives to additional rural communities. Future campaigns could benefit from increased collaboration with governmental and non-governmental partners to enhance reach and impact.

8. Acknowledgments

RHU extends its gratitude to the local leaders, health workers, and community members who contributed to the success of this campaign. Special thanks to our donors and partners, whose support made this campaign possible.
